NesTales - Hi and welcome to Tales from the NES, can you tell us something about you before we start?

Angelo80 - Hi guys, nice to meet you, I'm 36 and I come from the province of Novara, Italy. I am massage therapist, I love football and, more generally, all the sports. Married, with a son and maybe one more to come.

NesTales - Now our readers know something about you, it's time to tell us when and how Nintendo got into your house!

Angelo80 - By living close to Mattel in Oleggio Castello, many friends before me had already had the Nintendo Entertainment System, long time before. I saw the NES the first time at friend’s home, he had Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt. I took the nes after few months, however, between December ’89 and January ‘90. Nes came almost concurrently with the Sega Mega Drive! But despite I lived alongside Mattel factory I acquired it in a toy store! It was the legendary Control deck with Super Mario Bros. and I chose to pair the purchase with Soccer, the black box game.

NesTales - What was your favorite game when the NES was rocking the scene? (and why, let us hear about it)

Angelo80 - No doubt about it, it‘s DuckTales! It 's definitely the game I played more and more often. I could mention many others like Megaman 2 and SMB3 but the Capcom‘s masterpiece was a milestone, not only for me I guess!

NesTales - You guess right! Marco Turri and also, our last featured collector Steven, fall in love with DuckTales! So Angelo, what was the most wanted game in your Christmas list?

Angelo80 – I have read about both of them and I know Steven, he is a big nes fan as well as a great collector! As for my Christmas requests, surely I would have liked but I remember that I never had New Zealand Story! I played the game at friend’s home. The setup was always the same: his attic in a hot summer, cherry juice with ice, fries, „Goleador“ (italian gummies cola/fruit flavored) and New Zealand Story! eheheh, fantastic!!

NesTales - Definitely! Ah Ah!! But the NES have very hard to beat games so… Have you ever quit a game just because was too difficult?

Angelo80 - There are definitely two games that I hung in frustration.. and I have beated Ghost n Goblins heheh great emotions! Anyway as said, yes, I left 2 games uncompleted and unbeated, Gradius and Snake Rattle and Roll. Especially the latter, I arrived at 4th stage frustrated and annoyed ... never again! Gradius Instead, I saw on the screen a multitude of objects, it was impossible to dodge them all, ridiculous! It's not for me! Never beated both of them, and I never will for sure!

NesTales - 20 years and more have passed since NES was discontinued, during these years have you still played with it? Have you done retro gaming nights with friends before it was a trend?

Angelo80 - Sporadically it has definitely happen but not like today. Being a gamer at 360 degree, I spent time with any other consoles that went out on the market! Of course, few games with nes are part of my daily routine but I gave great space to all the news that the gaming market proposed to me! Since 2010, however, when the nes is forcefully returned in my life due to the desire to relive the past, I started to live it again!

NesTales - What was your reason for collecting NES games and do you also collect games from other countries? Tell us about your style, we want to know everything about your collecting path.

Angelo80 - The nes makes my hands shaking, kidnapped me as a child and it takes me back every time I turn it on. I only remember that console around, I never knew handhelds at that time, nes has been the lifeblood of our domestic evenings. I went to the store to Mattel factory store with my father, there was the same smell that was in the games there. A magical place!

NesTales - We all have ever read on the boxes "Oleggio Castello" what a beautiful place to live, uh ?!

Angelo80 - Ah Ah indeed! Is very green and quiet here! As for the games from other countries, No, I do not collect American NTSC games or PAL B, I only have a few exclusive that I like .. for the rest all ITA, my passion is for what is arrived on the Italian shelves and I must say I’m very satisfied to have everything I've always wanted!

NesTales - Have you ever thought that it was too difficult and pricey colleting videogames? Have you ever thought about quitting?

Angelo80 - When I started, the situation was the opposite in today! In 2009, I saw all my „child‘s stuff“ during the move because of marriage, pulling them out of the boxes I relived those magic moments looking at the covers! I immediately thought of setting up the nes, not to unpack the boxes! I played again, five minutes, a blow in the cartridge and BANG, again, it was love! I already had a hundred games on the shelf, ending the Italian market set during the last five years has not been easy though, fortunately, I was "lucky" in terms of purchases. Never thought to stop, you can not say „NO!“ to the heart! Too bad for inflation ... but I will not talk about this shit!

NesTales - Is your favorite retro game still the same nowadays or have you found something more interesting?

Angelo80 - Sure! But having tried and played so many others, I can say that many others fill my day today!

NesTales - Tell us about 3 NES games of your collection that you care more than others!

Angelo80 - Ghost n Goblins, very difficult, was epochal to finish it and that's why his picture is here! I do not think of ever being able to finish it again, I knew the game, too difficult pattern, and too much of them, to remember after 20 years and more! That evening when I beated it with a friend was incredible!
Jacky Chan’s Action Kung Fu, one of my favorites, entire evenings playing with it and still not tired. I put it on so often, really funny to play, playing it makes me laugh but game is serious, not childish and not easy by the way!
Nintendo World Cup! With 3 friends and the four player adapter, mamma mia! They know „mamma mia“ right? Mario says every second! Ahahah The matches ended 9 to 8, epic in 4 players, I could not include it in this mini list even if I sacrificed Mega Man for it!

NesTales - Except these 3 games what's the BEST one of your collection? The one you can't live without?

Angelo80 - Obviously Ducktales! Unfortunately I found no more my copy but I found this really nice when they were still in the shops at a penny because of the arrival of the next gen consoles! Since then, I kept it and never left! It is a piece from the exaggerated affective valence!

NesTales - Have you played some games recentrly?!

Angelo80 - I beated both flintstones games, battletoads and double dragon thanks to your review that bringed my attention over it and I’m near beating Kirby’s adventure! I play hard these days!!

NesTales - What do you think about collectors who want a "list" of titles to check what they have to buy and if they have a game already much like collecting football/baseball figurines? Collecting Videogames can be seen like collecting stamps or figurines - What's your opinion about those hordes of "new collectors"?

Angelo80 - I think it's absolutely insane! For me collecting is something that belongs to my life‘s experience, something that live in my heart, it has a completely different value and a different flavor.
Obviously it can not be like collecting stamps, having memories with these objects must necessarily affect your behavior. Why I do not collect game & watch despite they‘re beautiful ... I have not experienced them! Collecting for me is to stay forever child, reliving what it was... and nes is my Delorean! Retrogames are video games, I play them now as in my childhood! The stamps are beautiful and valuable but they die in their fancy showcase, the games live in my nes and in my heart.

NesTales - Last one but maybe the most important: This retro gaming trend can bring many buyers out there that want your childhood objects but they will never steal your memories, those feelings you have for the Nintendo Entertainment System can‘t be bought today!
Share with us your most treasured memory of the console!

Angelo80 - When I buy a game I can not wait to see it here with me, as we all I guess. But there's more! The memories of the past, that smell ... that's what makes me wince, the nes smell! Now as before, I admit it, I love to sniff them opening the packaging before playing ... no one will ever understand if you do not lived it!

NesTales – We completely understand… we are in love too with that smell, it’s well known! Thanks for your time Angelo!
